Yes, there are stars. Read the review first.

A number can tell you what someone felt. It can't tell you why, and the why is the whole job. So every Book Nook and KahaaniScope review comes with a rating, and a few hundred words you should get through before you look at it.

Tell me a story. It is one of the first things we ever say, long before we can read: a kahaani. Life is full of them: books, poetry, film, music, theatre. Put enough together and you get something closer to a symphony. That's the idea behind the name, and we began in Delhi in 2020 to chase it.

On the shelf

Book Nook — book reviews. One reader, one book, one argument, and a rating that is shorthand for it. KahaaniScope — the same, for film. Features — the monthly longform. One subject, argued properly, each Feature standing on its own: why Indian writing keeps ending up in the same three cities, or what happened to the radio plays that eighty-two years of All India Radio never thought to keep. It takes as long as it takes.

BACKMATTER — the shelf behind the shelf. Carousels on Instagram that trace a lineage or pick a fight: a hundred years of Japanese crime fiction, how a few Indian radio dramas got out alive. Context, with an argument attached.

The masthead

Subhojit Sanyal · Editor-in-Chief. A designer by trade, who came to design from publishing and never quite left the books. Edits the site, writes the Features, sets the type.

Sujit Sanyal · Master Moshai. The other half of the masthead. He keeps the content coming, gets the books out of the publishers' hands and onto our desk, and now and then writes a review himself. A good many of our reviewers are his friends, readers who said yes when he asked.

Between them, a small circle of readers, critics and friends. Every review carries its reviewer's name, ours included.
