The original Stree was something of a miracle — a horror comedy that actually worked on both registers, with a feminist subtext that wore its politics lightly enough to be widely accessible. Sequels to miracles are inherently difficult. Stree 2 does not match the original. It does not need to. It is a very enjoyable film on its own terms, which are somewhat different terms.

The Chanderi universe has expanded significantly since 2018. The Maddock Horror Comedy franchise now encompasses several films, and Stree 2 is positioned as a crossover event — characters from other instalments appear, the mythology grows, the stakes inflate. This is both the film's strength and its complication. The universe-building is occasionally distracting, pulling attention from the central story toward franchise mechanics.

Rajkummar Rao remains the franchise's most reliable asset. His Vicky — hapless, lovesick, genuinely funny — is the same character he was in the first film, which is correct; he has not been forced to become the hero he lacks the temperament to be. Pankaj Tripathi, as Rudra, is as watchable as he always is. Tamannaah Bhatia, in a special appearance, delivers with more wit than the role strictly requires.

The climax is spectacular in the way that event cinema climaxes are spectacular — loud, crowded, designed for collective audience response. It works in the theatre. It will work less well at home.

Fun. Genuinely fun. Which is not nothing.
